Air conditioning in Lexington, SC has two jobs, not one. From late spring into October a central system pulls heat out of the house on days in the 90s and wrings moisture out of air thick with humidity. When either job slips, you feel it: rooms that never quite cool, a sticky feel at 74 degrees, a power bill that keeps climbing.

Puzzled Comfort Solutions is a Lexington-based, owner-run HVAC contractor. We handle the whole cooling side of the house, from a failed part on a July afternoon to a complete system change-out, for homes and businesses across the Midlands.

Which AC service do you actually need?

Most calls fall into one of six buckets. Pick the one closest to what is happening at your house. Whichever fits, every cooling call covers the same ground:

  • Both halves of a split system get tested, outdoor condenser and indoor coil and blower.
  • Leaks are found before any refrigerant goes back in.
  • The condensate drain and pan get checked, since they cause most attic water damage.
  • A written price comes before work, with repair and replacement side by side when both are realistic.
  • A final run confirms cold supply air and a house that is drying out.

Something quit working

The outdoor unit hums but the fan won't spin, the vents blow warm, or the system won't start at all. That is a job for AC repair: find the failed part, show it to you, fix it.

The system is old, loud or can't keep up

If the unit is near the end of its life, uses R-22, or was never sized right for the house, AC installation and replacement covers load sizing, equipment choices, the install itself and permits.

Nothing is wrong yet

A spring visit through our AC maintenance and tune-up service cleans the coils, flushes the drain and tests the electrical parts before the first heat wave finds the weak one.

It keeps needing refrigerant

Refrigerant doesn't get used up. If someone has topped yours off more than once, there is a leak, and coil and refrigerant leak repair is about finding it and deciding whether to repair or replace the coil.

The indoor unit is the trouble spot

Water stains under the attic unit, a blower that won't run, or a rattle from the hall closet point to air handler repair and replacement.

Everything sits in one box outside

Manufactured homes, slab houses and small commercial buildings often use a single outdoor cabinet. Gas packs and packaged heat pumps have their own page under packaged unit service.

Central air in Midlands houses: what we run into

The housing around Lexington shapes how cooling systems fail. Two-story vinyl homes built since 2000 in Lexington and Red Bank usually put the air handler in the attic, where summer heat bakes the cabinet and a clogged drain can soak a bedroom ceiling. Brick ranches from the 1950s to the 1970s often use a closet or crawlspace setup with ductwork patched over the decades.

In the rural parts of the county, manufactured homes often run on packaged units with short duct connections under the skirting. Larger houses near Lake Murray commonly split the load between two or more systems, one per floor.

The climate adds its own wear. Yellow pine pollen coats outdoor coils every March and April. Afternoon thunderstorms bring lightning and power flickers that are hard on capacitors and control boards. And because the cooling season runs so long, a small problem in May has months to grow into a breakdown by August.

Repairing versus replacing an aging system

We price the repair, explain what a replacement would involve, list the pros and cons of each, and step back. Nobody pressures you into new equipment.

SituationWhat usually makes sense
Capacitor, contactor or fan motor failure on a unit under 12 yearsRepair
Compressor failure on a system past 12 to 15 yearsPrice both; replacement often wins
Repeated refrigerant leaks on an R-22 systemReplacement, since R-22 is only available from reclaimed supply
Rooms that never cool evenly, even after repairsLook at sizing and ductwork before buying new equipment
Rising bills and frequent service calls on an older unitCompare the running cost against a new SEER2 system
Homeowner and technician comparing AC repair and replacement options at a kitchen table
Going over a repair option and a replacement option side by side before any work begins.

Two rule changes matter for new equipment. Since 2023, efficiency is rated in SEER2, and split-system central ACs under 45,000 Btu/h sold in South Carolina must meet at least 14.3 SEER2. Since 2025, new residential systems have moved from R-410A to lower-impact A2L refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32. When a heat pump beats a straight AC paired with a furnace, we say so.

What changes the cost of AC work

We don't publish prices, because one symptom can have a cheap cause or an expensive one. What moves the number:

  • The part that failed. A capacitor and a compressor sit at opposite ends of the scale.
  • Refrigerant type and amount. R-22 is scarce; a large system holds more refrigerant than a small one.
  • Access. A cramped attic in August or a low crawlspace adds labor time.
  • Timing. After-hours calls can cost more than a weekday daytime visit.
  • For replacements: system size and efficiency, whether the indoor coil and line set are replaced, ductwork condition, electrical upgrades and the local permit.

You get the price before work starts. Financing is available on new systems, and it pays to mention a veteran, first-responder, school or health care connection, because each one carries a discount.

Licences, refrigerant rules and permits behind AC work

Our own paperwork is in order, fully licensed and insured, and the note below shows how to check any contractor with the state. Refrigerant falls under the EPA's Section 608 rules, which ban venting it and require recovery, one more reason a leaking system gets repaired before it is recharged. Swapping a condenser, air handler or whole system normally needs a mechanical permit; in Lexington County that comes from the town or county building office. Batesburg-Leesville's permit page, for one, ties the requirement to the 2021 International Mechanical Code with South Carolina amendments. The permit shows up as its own line on our replacement estimates.

Check any contractor's licence

Before you let anyone open up your AC, search the company on the SC LLR website. The state agency (Labor, Licensing and Regulation) keeps the public record of who holds an HVAC licence.

How a cooling service call works with us

Every cooling call follows the same six steps, whether it starts with a dead condenser or a replacement question.

  1. You describe the problem. Call (213) 423-7827 and say what the system is doing and where the indoor unit sits. Repairs are often handled the same day when the schedule allows, and emergency calls are answered 24/7, including emergency AC repair.
  2. We call ahead so the afternoon isn't spent waiting at the window.
  3. Thermostat, indoor unit, outdoor unit. Thermostat wiring and settings, then blower, coil and drain, then capacitor and contactor readings, refrigerant pressures and the temperature drop across the coil.
  4. Findings in plain language. You see the failed part or the reading and get the options, including the option to wait. Nothing gets done until you approve it.
  5. The repair or install, with panels back on and the work area cleaned up.
  6. A real test run long enough to confirm the system is cooling and pulling moisture out of the house.

To head off breakdowns, ask about a maintenance plan: two visits a year (cooling in spring, heating in fall), priority scheduling and member repair discounts, with the details covered on the phone.

“Don’t let the name fool you! The only thing that left me puzzled was why I haven’t used their services in the past. On the advice of a friend, I called them up and requested a quote to replace my old unit. Not only was I impressed with their price, but also how much time and effort they placed in ensuring that the finished product was going meet my wants and needs. Once the install was complete and the system was tested, an undeniable difference of comfort presented itself in my house and it didn’t take long to find that the unit was remarkably more efficient. I highly recommend using these guy’s!”

“My A/C fan was on, but was not cooling. That was on a Friday night. I called the technician that night which was late at 8.45 pm. He said that he could get to me around 2 to 3 pm Saturday., I said I wanted to find someone tonight , but if I can’t find anyone could I call you back and he said yes. We used fans that night, but I call the Technician back at 9am the next morning. He was here by 10:30 am. He was very professional and explained everything that asked. He made sure to give me maintenance advice and a federal worker discount. I’m very happy and will call Puzzled Comfort Solutions again when needed.”

What do Lexington homeowners want to know about their central air?

How long do AC systems last in the South Carolina heat?

Many central air conditioners here give somewhere around 10 to 15 years of service. Heat pumps that also heat the house in winter often land toward the shorter end because they work all year. Long cooling seasons, coils packed with spring pollen and skipped maintenance all wear a system down sooner, and so does an oversized unit or one installed on leaky ductwork.

Should I repair or replace a 15-year-old AC?

It depends on what failed and which refrigerant the system uses. A capacitor or contactor on a 15-year-old unit is a sensible repair. A dead compressor, a leaking indoor coil, or any major repair on an R-22 system usually points toward replacement, because you would be putting real money into equipment near the end of its life. We price both paths side by side and the decision stays with you.

Do you service attic and closet air handlers?

Yes. Attic air handlers are standard in many two-story homes built around Lexington since 2000, and hall-closet units show up in a lot of older ranches. We repair blower motors, drain pans, float switches, coils and controls, and replace the air handler when it has worn out. Attic units get extra attention on the drain side, because an overflow there ends up in your ceiling.

Which AC brands do you install in Lexington?

We are a Bryant-authorized dealer, so Bryant central air conditioners and heat pumps are what we install most. Even so, sizing and installation quality decide how a system performs far more than the logo does. At your free estimate we lay out the equipment options, with the trade-offs in efficiency, features and manufacturer warranty, and you pick. Ask on the phone if you want a specific make.
