Pine Ridge is a small, tree-covered town of about 2,200 people just south of Columbia Metropolitan Airport, around 20 minutes from our Lexington shop. We service air conditioners, heat pumps and furnaces across town and answer emergency calls 24/7. The town earns its name: pines tower over most lots, and every March and April they release a yellow-green dust that coats cars, porches, filters and outdoor coils, which shapes how we approach maintenance and repair here.
Tall pines, 1970s and 1980s homes and the spring pollen load
Pine Ridge incorporated in 1958, when it was a small place; the 1960 census counted 329 residents. Most of its growth came in the 1970s and 1980s, and the town reached 2,064 people in 2010 and 2,167 in 2020. Census estimates now put about 37 percent of homes in the 1970s and 1980s and close to 40 percent between 2000 and 2019, with roughly one in ten a mobile home. So the town holds two generations of systems: original ducts from the growth years and newer heat pumps from the second wave. Heat is mostly electric, about 58 percent, with natural gas in roughly 40 percent of homes.

The trees keep roofs shaded, which helps in summer, but they also bring three HVAC problems. First, filters clog quickly in spring and starve the system of air. Second, pollen and needles pack the outdoor coil, so the condenser cannot shed heat and the compressor works harder. Third, older return ducts that leak in a crawlspace or attic pull in unfiltered air, carrying pollen straight to the indoor coil. Our AC maintenance visits are built around clearing those problems before peak heat.

For households with allergies, a better filter is often worth more than a bigger air conditioner. Our page on whole-home air purifiers compares media cabinets and other options.
The work Pine Ridge's trees create for us

AC Maintenance in Pine Ridge
A spring tune-up with a full coil cleaning matters more under Pine Ridge's pines than almost anywhere we work, because March and April pollen packs condenser fins before the first hot week.

Air Purifiers & Filtration in Pine Ridge
Whole-home media cabinets catch far more pollen than a thin grille filter, which helps Pine Ridge households with allergies when the yellow dust settles on every porch, car and window screen in town.

AC Repair in Pine Ridge
Pollen-packed coils push head pressure up, and the summer failures that follow in Pine Ridge are often capacitors and condenser fan motors that cooked under that extra heat for weeks.

Heat Pump Services in Pine Ridge
Electricity heats about 58 percent of Pine Ridge homes, so heat pumps run nearly year-round here and a fouled outdoor coil costs efficiency in both seasons.

Duct Sealing & Testing in Pine Ridge
Leaky return ducts in a crawlspace or attic draw in pollen-laden air that bypasses the filter entirely, a common fault in the 1970s and 1980s houses that make up much of the town.

Heat Pump Installation in Pine Ridge
Nearly four in ten Pine Ridge homes went up between 2000 and 2019, and the heat pumps installed with them are reaching the age where a planned replacement beats a July breakdown.
Learn moreWhat does a pollen-season visit in Pine Ridge include?
Spring visits start at the condenser. We shut off power, lift the fan top where the design allows, clear needles from the base pan and rinse the coil from the inside out so debris leaves the way it came in. Then we check refrigerant pressures, capacitor and contactor readings and fan motor amperage, since heat stress from a dirty coil often shows up there first.

Inside, we pull the filter, inspect the indoor coil and blower for buildup, clear the condensate line and look at the return duct connections. If a heat pump is involved, we check the reversing valve and defrost operation too, since these systems run nearly all year. You get a plain summary of what we found and what, if anything, needs attention.

Fish Hatchery Road, Pine Ridge Drive and the South Congaree line
Town Hall sits on Fish Hatchery Road, a few doors from the Cohen Campbell fish hatchery that SCDNR operates on the same road. Pine Ridge Middle and Herbert A. Wood Elementary stand side by side on Pine Ridge Drive, and older students attend Airport High in Lexington School District 2. Pine Ridge shares its public library branch with South Congaree, its neighbor directly to the west, and most of our trips in pass through that town first.
The hatchery is older than the town. SCDNR's records date it to 1935, built with Depression-era federal work programs, and it still raises warm-water fish in a string of ponds about 1.3 miles west of US-321. Fish Hatchery Road runs east to that highway, which is the quickest way out toward Cayce and West Columbia. Town Hall sits at 2757 Fish Hatchery Road, and any replacement we install is permitted before it goes in.
Between Pine Ridge and our Lexington base
From Pine Ridge, work west through South Congaree to Platt Springs Road (SC-602), take it to SC-6 at Red Bank, then follow South Lake Drive north into Lexington, roughly 12 miles.
Typical drive: about 20 min (12 mi)

How often should Pine Ridge homeowners change filters during pollen season?
Under the pines that shade most Pine Ridge lots, check a standard one-inch filter during March and April every two weeks and plan to replace it at least monthly, sooner if it looks grey or yellow. Thicker four- or five-inch media filters last longer but still need a look after the heaviest pollen weeks. A clogged filter cuts airflow, which can freeze the indoor coil and make the system run longer to keep up.
Can pollen on the outdoor coil make my AC stop cooling?
It can, and on Pine Ridge's shaded lots needles add to the problem. Pollen, needles and dust block the fins that let the condenser shed heat. Pressure inside the system climbs, the compressor and fan motor run hot, and cooling drops off on the hottest afternoons. Left long enough, it can trip a safety switch or shorten the life of a capacitor or motor. A thorough coil cleaning after pollen season restores most of that lost capacity.
Do you install whole-home air purifiers in Pine Ridge?
Yes. In a town named for its pines, pollen is the usual target, and the most effective option is usually a deep media filter cabinet mounted at the return of your air handler or furnace, because it catches particles across every room the system serves. We look at your blower, duct size and return setup first, since a thick, tight filter on a return that is too small will restrict airflow. We will explain how each option handles pollen, dust and odors before you decide.
